What are the Best Probiotics?

Best Probiotics 101:
How To Choose the Best Probiotics

Best Probiotics For a Healthy Mouth

The human mouth is filled with various kinds of bacteria. While some bacteria is harmless, and some even beneficial, other bacteria can cause diseases such as dental caries (cavities), as well as more serious problems like gingivitis and periodontal disease. In these diseases, bacteria grows and spreads throughout the space in our mouths. Probiotics can help prevent these problems by occupying the space normally used by other bacteria. Thus, probiotics play an important role in the prevention of cavities, gingivitis, and periodontal disease.

Best Probiotics and Overall Health

The human GI tract is home to multitudes of bacteria which create microbiomes that are unique to everyone. Probiotics are a friendly part of these microbiomes that help our bodies process foods and vitamins to maintain equilibrium. By lining the walls of our small intestine and colon, probiotics strengthen the GI tract and prevent bugs from sticking around. There are millions of probiotics in the human body, working overtime towards optimal health.

Many side effects that can occur when
the GI equilibrium is off.

These include the following:

    • Skin problems
    • Food sensitivities
    • Digestive difficulties
    • Inability to lose weight
    • Frequent colds
    • Diarrhea
  • Constipation

What To Look For In Good Probiotics

High CFU Count

Development of probiotics has improved drastically in the past several years. Over time, there has been a gradual increase in dosage of Colony-Forming Units (CFUs), which in turn enhances the growth of healthy bacteria in the human digestive tract. For most good probiotics, you should look for a formula with at least 40 billion CFUs.

Multiple Strains

While most probiotic supplements only contain one type of bacteria, those with a variety of bacteria are more efficient in fighting off disease-causing bacteria. Finding probiotics that use a comprehensive approach to restoring equilibrium will leave you with a healthier gut. Look for supplements with at least nine probiotic strains.

A few of those strains are listed below should be included in best probiotics:

    • Bifidobacteria Bifidum
    • Bifidobacterium Lactis
    • Bifidobacterium Longum
    • Lactobacillus Acidophilus
    • Lactobacillus Gasseri
    • Lactobacillus Plantarum
  • Lactobacillus Rhamnosus

The substrains listed next to each strain indicate that a particular probiotic strain has undergone clinical studies. Avoid probiotic formulas that do not name the substrain, as this usually means strains were not studied or proven to be effective. Find a probiotic that includes the substrains to ensure credibility and optimal effectiveness.

Recent research shows that using fiber-based prebiotics (such as NutraFlora Fiber) helps probiotics populate and flourish in your gut, significantly increasing the efficiency of the probiotic.

3 Myths About Probiotics

Here are three big myths about probiotics that we’ve encountered:

  1. Yogurt is the best probiotic around. Alternatively, most yogurt brands only include one strain – Lactobacillus – and are full of hidden sugars. Look for Greek Yogurts and other yogurts that mention probiotic strains by name.
  2. All probiotics are the same. In fact, probiotics come in many forms. Many have cheap fillers that significantly reduce their effectiveness. Be sure to read nutrition labels and familiarize yourself with probiotic variety.
  3. Stomach acid destroys probiotics. The best probiotic supplements actually have capsules designed to resist stomach acid. Be sure to look for “acid-resistant” supplements for the best effects

7 Foods with Probiotics

Some people find supplements to be the best way to consume probiotics, but probiotics also occur naturally in many foods:

1. Sauerkraut – Sauerkraut is made up of organic acids and a slew of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants.

2. Miso – Packed with probiotics, protein, and nutrients, miso has been known to treat many intestinal disorders.

3. Greek Yogurt – Greek yogurt ranks near the top of natural probiotics. Healthy bacteria that’s added to particular yogurts include Lactobacillus Bulgaricus, Streptococcus Thermophilus, Lactobacillus Acidophilus, Lactobacillus Casei, and Bifidus.

4. Cheese – All different types of cheese are high in probiotics. Depending on what kind of milk a particular cheese comes from (sheep, goat, cow, etc.), cheese is filled with different combinations of Thermophilus, Bifidus, Bulgaricus, and Acidophilus. Raw or unpasteurized cheeses are especially packed with probiotics.

5. Kombucha – Kombucha is a highly probiotic beverage because it is fermented with bacteria and yeast. Kombucha’s popularity is growing rapidly in America, especially within the last five years.

6. Kimchi – Kimchi is another great natural probiotic. Kimchi contains significant amounts of enzymes and proteins, as well as several other vitamins and minerals.

7. Buttermilk – Buttermilk is not only delicious, but it’s also low in calories and fat, and high in vitamin B12, calcium, riboflavin, protein, and potassium. Buttermilk can also be used in many recipes in place of milk, water, and butter.

While these are all excellent sources of probiotics, you would have to consume massive amounts of these foods to reach equilibrium. While eating healthy is a necessary part of optimal health, it’s just a small part of the consumption of probiotics.

Although probiotics are incredibly healthy and beneficial to overall health, anyone with a weak immune system should consult their doctor before using a probiotic supplement.
