The Invisalign® system consists of multiple thin, clear, customized aligners that fit directly over your teeth. Thus, progressively straightening teeth. This system is a functional alternative to metal braces. The main benefits of the Invisalign® system, or invisible braces, is their improved appearance (because they are clear) and their comfort.
While eating, these invisible braces or Invisalign® aligners can be taken out. In addition, the removal of Invisalign® for brushing and flossing is another perk. The ability to remove these invisible braces may reduce the risk of both cavities and gum disease when compared to traditional braces. The removal of traditional braces, however, is not possible for eating or cleaning. Invisible braces for adults and teenagers can be conveniently removed for special events, work meetings, or photographs. In the end, the features of invisible braces, or Invisalign®, make them extremely practical for busy adults and teenagers.
The first step in the process of obtaining invisible braces is scheduling an appointment. The proper candidate for Invisalign® would be an adult who has crowding of their teeth or slight to moderate spacing concerns. Also, a teenager who has all of their permanent teeth except for the third molars would be a good candidate for Invisalign®. After the initial evaluation, we will inform the patient whether he or she will benefit from invisible braces or the Invisalign® system. Impressions (molds) of the teeth are taken and along with a detailed set of instructions, they are sent to Invisalign®.
Invisible Braces: The Planning Process for Invisalign®
In the planning process, the Invisalign® lab will send us a digital preview of your new, straight smile. Using this information, we can design a series of clear aligners. Depending on each individual, 12 to 48 aligners could be necessary to achieve the desired result. As a part of treatment, we may need to reshape certain teeth or place small plastic attachments on your teeth. These attachments will help move them into the correct position. Most cases require a short visit every six to eight weeks to deliver new trays and make necessary adjustments to your invisible braces.
In some cases, individuals may not be good candidates for Invisalign®. More complex cases, such as underbites, extreme overbites, and crossbites, may require treatment with traditional braces. For severely crooked teeth and very complex bites, we are happy to help you make contact with an orthodontist. Any qualified orthodontist can help complete your treatment.
